In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need.
Through their One for One mission, they’ve given 50 million pairs of shoes to children in need so far.
Realising the One for One mission could be extended, in 2011 TOMs Eyewear was launched – with every pair purchased, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. An amazing 250,000 people have had their sight restored through purchases of TOMS Eyewear to date. And not only does a purchase help the individual, it also supports sustainable community-based eye care programs, the creation of professional jobs (often for young women), and helps provide basic eye care training to local health volunteers and teachers.
Since 2006 the movement has gone from strength to strength and now includes:
‘One Day Without Shoes’ and ‘World Sight Day’, their annual days to raise awareness for the global issues of poverty and avoidable blindness and visual impairment.
