About Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign Barrett's oesophagus is a change in the lining of the oesophagus (gullet) due to prolonged reflux of stomach contents (heartburn, hiatus hernia). Its importance lies in the fact that it can lead to cancer and the incidence of this type of cancer of the oesophagus is increasing dramatically, being the cancer with the most rapidly increasing incidence in the Western world. It is, if you like, the unsung villain of the cancer world. More people die from this form of cancer (7,500) in the UK each year than are killed in road traffic accidents. It is estimated that there are up to 375,000 people in the UK with Barrett's oesophagus. The three principal objectives of the Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign (established in 1999) are: 1. To secure long-term funding for the UK National Barrett's Registry (UKBOR) and enable it to expand its activities. 2. To provide a patient support service for the increasing number of anxious Barrett's patients and their relatives (e.g "Barrett's Wessex") 3. To promote and fund research into means of reducing the incidence of and hopefully preventing oesophageal cancer in Barrett's oesophagus patients. The Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign is the only charity whose main objectives are the study of all aspects of Barrett's oesophagus, with particular reference to prevention of oesophageal cancer.
