About Cygnet Training Theatre

Cygnet Training Theatre is the only professional drama school in the UK where students work as a professional ensemble throughout their three-year course. Cygnet students are selected for their exceptional qualities and learn every aspect of theatre, film, television and radio drama including acting, directing, production, stage management, lighting, sound and theatre management. It is the practical 'hands-on' nature of the course and its real world vocational focus that is so important to our students.
We train, rehearse and perform in our own small theatre where each year some 60 shows are enjoyed by more than 3,000 people from Devon who know they will see a great production by a remarkably talented cast. Our students also deliver creative drama workshops in schools and colleges and take their excellent productions on tour, including annual performances in London.
But backstage at the theatre, it's a differnt story. We desperately need to: Insulate and heat our large rehearsal room - called the 'ice box' by our students because it can be unbearably cold for much of the winter; Replace the ancient malfunctioning showers which are so necessary for students constantly involved in physical work; Replace our ancient inefficent boiler, and install solar panel on our roof to reduce our total energy costs and cut our carbon footprint.
These improvements will enable us to use our building to its full potential and provide our students with the facilities they deserve and are entitiled to expect; encourage other community groups and touring companies to use our theatre in the evening and weekends, producing additional income which will keep our students fees down.
