About North West London & Chilterns Group of Advanced Motorists

The North West London and Chilterns Group of Advanced Motorists was founded in 1961 to organise events for IAM Members in the area. In 1970 the Group was one of the first in the country to organise a scheme whereby drivers could join the Group for one year as an Associate in order to gain help from existing Members to pass the IAM\'s test. This developed many years later into the IAM\'s Skill for Life scheme.

Although the Group\'s boundaries have been reduced since 1975 by the formation of other IAM Groups the membership has steadily grown, with currently around 400 Members, and still covers a huge population in North-West London and South Hertfordshire. The 100 or so Associates who join each year are coached by around 40 Advisers, all of whom give up their spare time to do this voluntarily and who undergo training to do this useful work.

There may be reduced insurance costs but the main benefit is to become a safer driver consistent with maintaining good progress on the road. IAM Members have a greatly reduced collision rate than ordinary drivers because of their driving skills and increased awareness.
