 Bristol Advanced Motorists
Founded in 1958, Bristol Advanced Motorists is best known today for our Skill for Life advanced driving courses. The Group has grown to become the leading road safety charity throughout Bristol and the Southwest, dedicated to raising driving standards, engaging with the road-using public and influencing road safety policy.
Bristol Advanced Motorists is run entirely by volunteers. Even our lecturers and Observers, who guide drivers through the courses in their own time and give numerous hours of practical on-road advice, offer all their time freely and without charge.
Each year we run 4 advanced driving courses taking around 30 - 35 drivers on each. Our aim is to reduce the road fatality and serious injury figures around Bristol by training as many drivers to an advanced standard as we possibly can. Almost 90% who attend the 6 months training courses actually go on to pass the Advanced Driving Test.
The Group serves an area from Weston-super-Mare to Gloucester and is affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the UK's largest organisation dedicated to improving driving skills We currently have a membership of over 400 of which 40 are fully trained Advanced Driving Observers. Virtually all of our funding comes from within our own membership.
The Group meets once a month at the BAWA Health and Leisure Centre in Southmead Road Filton. Our meetings are free and open to everyone and we have a varied programme of guest speakers throughout the year.
