German Shepherd Rescue Elite: Saving Dogs Every Day

Fundraising Heroes headerEach week we recognise ‘Fundraising Heroes’ giving them the spotlight to highlight the incredible difference causes and charities across the UK make every day.

German Shepherd Rescue Elite (GSRE) was established with two clear aims: firstly, to rescue and happily re-home at-risk German Shepherd Dogs; and secondly, to educate people on the breed in order to avoid crisis situations arising in the first place. They are a proactive charity, run by volunteers who share one main attribute – an absolute passion for the welfare of animals.

The German Shepherd is a wonderful breed, characterised by high energy and intelligence. GSRE recognise that many of the problems owners may encounter with their dog can be ironed out with targeted training and behavior advice, and they favour a preventative approach – offering advice and support to people before they commit to taking on a dog. It’s very important for potential owners to understand that, as a large working breed, German Shepherds are not a suitable pet for everyone.

GSRE takes in many dogs from council pounds – where they may have ended up after being callously dumped, or picked up as a stray. In many instances, if they don’t take the dog into their care, it will be euthanized after just seven days, simply to make space for the next one. This brings into stark focus just how vital GSRE is in their role of saving the lives of these defenseless dogs.

The charity fundraises on a rolling basis throughout the year, as they always have around 40 dogs to provide for, either in commercial kennels or foster homes. They vaccinate and neuter all the dogs in their care, and when you factor in the inevitable unexpected vet bills, their average overheads come in at around £10,000 per month.

Now GSRE has teamed up with easyfundraising in order to raise more funds to cover the costs of caring for the dogs they rescue. So far, they’ve raised a very impressive £2,726.40.

They promote easyfundraising via their website and social media and include a reminder in their monthly newsletter. Christmas is a key time of year to bring in lots of donations – last year they raised £307.40 during the festive period and their supporters have been very positive about how easy it is to use the site and raise free funds. The most important thing to remember is, as GSRE staff member Lizzy Brown says:

“Every penny donated to the charity goes towards the care of the dogs.”

Why not sign up with easyfundraising today, and help support GSRE with their vital and compassionate work with dogs in need.
