World Challenge Borneo 2017 - Bonnie Price

In July 2017, will be going on a 3 1/2 week World Challenge expedition to Borneo. It is the world's third largest island and is one of only two places in world where you can see the “man of the forest” – the famous orangutan! First we will acclimatise by undertaking a few days of trekking through the beautiful jungle while getting used to the heat and humidity, and we will also get a chance to explore the culture and the language. Next, we will embark on a long trek through the jungle and many longhouse villages, sleeping under natural shelters and hammocks. We will climb Mt. Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South-east Asia at 4095m, and see the sun rise at the summit. We will get to see plenty of the many indigenous species of flora and fauna; over 360 new animals and plants have been discovered on the Island of Borneo alone since 1996. For volunteering, we will help with conservation and the community in the states of Sabah and Sarawak. I will work with a national reserve to help with Borneo's conservation efforts. Then I will become involved with the local community and culture in the small villages by living and interacting with them. Finally, we will get to explore the island on our own, possibly visiting, the sting-less jellyfish lake, the floating markets and the indigenous orangutans. My goal is to try an raise the whole cost of the trip myself, £3750, through many fundraising events and kind donations.
