Chernobyl Children's Life Line bring children from the Chernobyl disaster zone for 4 weeks respite care to clear their bodies of radiation which has been proven to add 2 years to their life expectancy. The children, who come from Belarus and Ukraine, not only live surrounded by contamination but they also live in extreme poverty and therefore need to grow and rear their own food in/on the contaminated ground. The average household income is £80 per month, despite working long hours, yet the cost of food is the same as here in the UK and clothing is more expensive than here. Consequently they have a few ill fitting clothes and often do not have shoes so have been known to come to the UK in another families shoes that they have borrowed. We send the children home with clothes that we are donated and emergency supplies for their families as they literally arrive in what they stand up in. The children have said that "they have been in a fairy tale" whilst they have been here as simple things like having plentiful food, being able to eat fruit (which is a luxury for them), being able to sleep in a bed rather than on the floor in a tiny house, some not dissimilar to a shed!! They are able to be children for a month and not having to go home after school and help with childcare, working on the garden growing the food, cooking etc as the parents are out working long hours. A huge percentage of children live in a one parent family due to the 3 out of 4 people being conically ill or disabled by the effects of the disaster. There are a horrendous number of children living in orphanages as they have lost both parents or they are so disabled they are removed from their parents at birth by the authorities (they have no choice in this unfortunately)!! Some children also live with a grandparent or sibling. Each child we bring to the UK costs in the region of £500 for the flights, visa's and transportation in their own country. In addition to that we have an interpretor come with the children (often a teacher) plus we need to hire a mini bus, petrol and trips out (although we get as many people and organisations as possible to donate these). Raising around £7k a year to bring 10 children to the UK is a huge task and so by nominating our charity to receive donations via easy fundraising is so important to us. If you would like to make a monetary donation please go to www.justgiving.com/CCLLEastleighLink. If you would like to sponsor a day out, a child's trip or even some ice creams for the children on one of their trips we would be so grateful. Please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com and we can talk to you about that. In addition, if you would like to host 2 children or an interpretor for the 4 weeks they are in the UK please contact us on the above email address or by phone.
