Overview Nepal is a landlocked country set between the plains of Northern India and the high plateau of Southern Tibet. Within the small area of Nepal there is the greatest range of altitude on earth, ranging from the Terai, only 100m above sea level, to the summit of Mount Everest at 8,848m. Aside from its impressive terrain, Nepal has a lot more to offer visitors. The capital and only major city in Nepal is Kathmandu, the ultimate travellers crossroads and a huge trekking station. Nepal also boasts a vast array of fascinating temples as well as areas of lowland jungle that are home to a huge variety of flora and fauna. These features combine to make Nepal a destination of real diversity. Similarly to the UK, Nepal has four main seasons. The monsoon occurs in the summer months, from the end of June to the middle of September, and the remainder of the year is comparatively dry. Temperatures can drop to freezing in the winter, especially in the mountains, which also experience heavy snowfall. Temperatures can soar in the summer, particularly in the hill regions. Nepal became independent in 1923 but didnt achieve total autonomy until the British withdrew from the region completely in 1947 (the year of Indian independence). Nepal became the worlds youngest republic in May 2008 after the abolition of its monarchy.
