World Challenge: Himalayas, 2013
I am a 15-year-old school student campaigning to raise money to go on a trip to India with fellow students in summer 2013 through the organisation World Challenge (www.world-challenge.co.uk).
My month-long expedition will begin with a five-day acclimatisation period where my team and I will be based around Manali, experiencing the local way of life whilst adapting to the higher altitudes. Then we will embark on our 12-13 day trek through the Kasakafnu Pass where there will be dramatic scenery at altitudes above 5,000 metres. Following this we will undertake our project work in a Himalayan community where we will be working with either a school or an orphanage. These projects vary each year; some past projects have been building a pump for a village, painting classrooms, putting a roof on a school-house and building furniture for classrooms. The final phase of the trip will be some ‘rest and relaxation’, where I hope to visit the Taj Mahal and experience riding an elephant. This trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity and opens many doors in my future and will give extra UCAS points to support my application to Universities in three years time.
In order to do this I need to raise £3,645 plus further money for kit and immunisations etc. I have been working hard to raise money for my fund and have already raised approximately £1,600. I have done this by playing gigs in local pubs and other events including the Charfield Beer Festival and a wedding. I have also been babysitting, car washing, house cleaning, gardening and busking in Bath. I am also enquiring about local part-time work. Working with my team, I have been involved in organising cake sales, a quiz night and a Christmas Shopping evening as well as litter picking in my village and bag packing.
I should be grateful if you would consider using website when doing any shopping as the retailers will donate a small percentage to my cause which will all be very welcome.
Thanks very much.
