We are planning to completely rebuild our children's unit at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. We have tried to look at the new unit through the eyes of our children and their families. We will be putting a greater emphasis on day assessment and treatment where possible so that more children can go home at night. For those who are too sick to go home we will be creating ensuite facilities in six rooms so that for the first time parents can stay with their child overnight in some reasonable comfort. We will be looking to make the unit friendly and accommodating to children of all ages, and are mindful of the different needs that our teenage patients have. Heightened security will be achieved by a state of the art reception desk and area that will welcome both inpatient and outpatient visitors. We have enough funds to build this in the Autumn of 2011 but still need to raise £1.6m to build the rest of the department.
