Heya :) Thank you for deciding to read my story.I have always wanted to make a real difference to the world we live in and as soon as I found out about this opportunity through Raise and Give society at The University of Exeter, I couldn't resist.Sooooo in July 2022, I will be volunteering in Uganda for 4 weeks to transform empty fields into exciting playgrounds bursting with colour and fun for local schools and their pupils. I will be working alongside the Play Action International team to ignite every disadvantaged child's potential through the power of play, creating a legacy for children to learn and develop essential life skills as well as nurture their physical, psychological and social development through the language they know best.Play is something we often take for granted in the UK. In many communities across the world, play is not a priority, despite it being one of the fundamental rights of a child and this is something we must change. By increasing access to play and education we support their long-term health, well-being and employment prospects in the future, giving them the power to map their own path to a bigger and brighter future. Play gives children their childhoods back, and we believe that every child, everywhere, deserves to enjoy the benefits of play.Here are some mind-blowing results in primary schools from the work PAI has already done and why we need to ensure every child has access to play and an education:43% reported a decrease in anti-social behaviour 74% of children gave “the playground” as the reason to attend school100% of schools noted a reduction in student absenteeism98% of schools saw a significant increase in enrolment85% of children learnt new skills83% of teachers saw improvements in children’s behaviour and concentration during classesI am so excited to embark on this new challenge and share my journey with you.
