Over £32m raised for good causes through easyfundraising
Stanley Crook is a small hilltop village in County Durham. The village grew around two coal mines. By the 1960s the pits were closed and the county council scheduled the village for demolition. The houses owned by the coal board were actually demolished but when they could not afford to buy out the owners of the remaining properties they decided to prevent further development hoping the village would just wither on the vine. Despite this the villagers stood firm and erected a wooden Village Hall and this was replaced in 1986 with a metal structure. Now the last shop and the last pub in the village have closed, the village hall has an increased role in holding the village together. The Village Hall association owns the building and has total resposibility for its upkeep all funds raised go towards maintaining this vital building.
