Zelyn Academy - Kibera Slum School

Zelyn Academy currently provides a program of high quality education, food, clothing and learning materials for 276 pre primary and primary school aged orphaned or destitute children living in the second biggest slum in the world, Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya. Zelyn is unique from other schools as it prides itself in being a non fee paying school. Unlike the majority, the education, feeding and clothing program is provided totally free of charge, as even charging a minimal fee renders education inaccessable for the destitute children of Kibera. The success of the school program is wholly dependent on financial and in kind donations from well wishers. Our mission at Zelyn Academy is to combat the cycle of poverty in Kibera through the nurturing of its children by fulfilling their physcial, emotional, social and spiritual needs. The vision of Zelyn is to see successive generations of children pass through the school, go on to realise their full potential in life and then give back to the community in which they were raised. Sadly, in the current economic downturn it has become increasingly difficult to raise adequate funds to support the full school program which has dire consequences. When food supplies are limited, it is distressing to see children gradually dropping out of school in search of alternative, undesirable and dangerous ways of earning a little money on the streets in order to stave off hunger. Once on the streets, they become extremely vulnerable to becoming drawn into crime, drug taking and prostiution in order to survive.
