L’Arche Inverness, New Workshop Resource Centre -Building Community Through Meaningful Work and Training for Adults with Learning Disabilities.

What is L’Arche? L’Arche Inverness has been building community with people with learning disabilities in the Highlands since 1975 and is part of the wider family of 132 L’Arche communities, in 30 different countries, first founded by Jean Vanier in 1964. In 5 households throughout Inverness 9 people with Learning Disabilities and their assistants share all the everyday tasks, roles and responsibilities of making a home together. Each person is enabled to learn, sustain and develop the living skills that they need to take on this responsibility.

What Are L’Arche Workshops? We also provide day activities, work and training for 16 people at our workshops centre at Brarannoch, Drummond Crescent. Our current activities include woodworking, candle and craft making and small scale market gardening projects. Here each person is supported to learn and develop practical work expertise and skills for living, including: literacy; numeracy and handling finances; cooking and cleaning; team working and individual responsibility; working with members of the public and so forth.

Meeting Changing Needs And Demands: Whilst many of the present members of L’Arche Inverness Workshops are now growing older we are also increasingly being asked to provide a service for younger people with significant disabilities in and around Inverness, In addition we continue to be committed to meeting the requirements of Care Commission Standards and of the Disability Discrimination Act – we want to ensure a safe and accessible work and training environment for all.

A New Workshop Resource Centre: Our present workshop buildings, first built in the early 1980s, no longer fit our purpose and so we are building a new Workshop Resource Centre. Here we will continue to provide Skills Development, Training and Support for People with Learning Disabilities in the Highlands. We will also increase our capacity, welcoming 25 people and provide a Retirement Project for those who are retiring from work, but continuing to engage in life long learning. We will provide essential training for people with learning disabilities, in order to enable their access to the widest spectrum of employment opportunities in the Inverness area, regardless of ability,age or circumstance offering responsive and appropriate support throughout every stage of life.
