About this cause

About our cause

My name is Alison. I am 53 and live in Gravesend, Kent. My lifelong passion has been to go to Borneo to help save orangutans from extinction. Last year, I battled through a life threatening illness and felt that my dream would never be possible. I endured several abdominal surgeries and was left unable to eat. I was fed into a Hickman Line with Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) and spent over 9 months in hospital. I eventually came home and was looked after by my family and nurses. After many months I was able to eat small snacks and nutritional drinks. I am now eating small meals and still depend on nutrition drinks. Yoga and meditation have been fundamental in my recovery, particularly emotionally. I work voluntarily at a school but have not yet returned to a full time job. I was a Nursery Manager and have a degree in Early Childhood Studies with Early Years Professional status. Through sheer determination and motivation from close family and friends I have decided to make my dream come true. With my condition time is at the essence. I know that I could become ill again at any time. However, I have booked a volunteer placement at the Sepilok Orangutan Centre in Borneo where I will work alongside professionals to care for orphaned, sick and abused orangutans that have lost their homes to deforestation. These orangutans will then be re-introduced to live in protected areas of the rainforest. To enable me to do this volunteer programme, I am fundraising to help pay for the placement and travel costs. I have held boot fairs; craft stalls and even washed cars. I have designed my own Power Point presentation on orangutans, which, when finished I will hopefully take into local schools and nurseries I hope to raise awareness of the plight of endangered orangutans and give powerful talks on why they should be saved from extinction.
