About our cause

I will be going to the Peruvian Amazon to study the behaviour of 2 populations of Amazon river dolphin. These are extremely rare creatures that are hugely important not only to the local people and ecology of the river itself, but also because they act as an indicator species. Indicator species reflect the health of an ecosystem; if the water is polluted the dolphins will not stay there. Thus by studying them and their behaviour we can begin to understand the health of the Amazon and what might need to be done in order to save it, plus the effects that deforestation and pollution are having on the animals in the area. The Amazon is quickly disappearing, there may not be much time left to explore and understand it. It would be an incredible shame to lose such fascinating biodiversity as the river dolphin through the fault of our own actions. I will be living on a boat in the heart of the Amazon for 6 weeks, will design and conduct my own experiment, present my findings to resident academics and write up the results for my masters thesis in Zoology.
