Over £35m raised for good causes through easyfundraising
The graduate mental health placement provides psychology graduates with hands-on experience in the mental health field. This placement takes place in Sri Lanka, a country that has experienced much trauma and is still recovering from a 25-year civil war and the after-effects of the 2004 tsunami. Currently, there are limited resources for individuals in need of professional psychological support. These projects aim to reduce stigma around mental health and strengthen resources as well as improving the well-being and self-esteem of individuals with mental health problems. This experience is designed to provide volunteers with an insight into global mental health and cultural differences in approaches to mental health. During my time in Sri Lanka I will be working with other volunteers to run a variety of projects. This will include working in clinical settings and within the community running therapeutic sessions for service users in different stages of recovery. In addition, I will be teaching English to children and young adults and working with individuals with special educational needs. As well, I will also be taking on the role of a Peer Mentor. This is a pastoral role that involves providing support and attending to the needs of other volunteers.
