About this cause

About our cause

Hello everyone! I am currently in my second year of psychology at the University of Birmingham. I am due to join SLV in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks, from July to August 2018 on an exciting psychology placement. I am embarking on a fundraising initiative to support offset some of associated expenses. A bit of background of SLV. In 2010 group of psychology graduates led by Lucy Nightingale were passionate in putting their degrees to good use and so travelled to Sri Lanka to engage in work surrounding mental illness. While in Sri Lanka, this group was fortunate to meet Yasintha. By the passion and determination of them all, they founded SLV.Global. A mental health placement which assists psychology graduates and students in gaining valuable skills and experiences in new cultures such as Sri Lanka, India and Bali. According to the WHO, one in four people in the world are affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their life. To put things into perspective for you guys, thats over 450 million people that are currently suffering from such conditions, which places mental health disorders amongst the leading cause of poor health and disabilities worldwide! While mental health issues are common, a lot of help is becoming available and through this experience I hope to bring further awareness, while developing my own skills. In Sri Lanka, I will be working with patients who are suffering with mental health issues. Consequently, I will run creative activities and therapies engaging patients in music, art and sensory skills. During my time in Sri Lanka, I will also attend workshops lead in company by Samutthana, the Kings College London resource center for trauma, displacement and mental health. Samutthanas aim is to train and support organization and individuals to respond to the psychological needs of trauma sufferers. Along with these projects I will be working with persons with special needs and teaching English on vocational courses. Throughout my time in Sri Lanka, I will be living with other volunteers with a Sri Lankan family, where I will be able to learn more about the culture as well as eat some yummy Sri Lankan curry. For those who donate, I promise to make you some yummy curry on my return. Thank you in advance for your generosity, support and kind wishes. Arielle Caesar
