About this cause

About our cause

Birmingham St Mary's Hospice offers life-changing care to around 1,000 people each year with illnesses such as cancer, Aids, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and respiratory disease. Serving Birmingham and Sandwell, the majority of patients are looked after in their homes by the community nursing team surrounded by family and friends. When someone requires more intensive care, whether it be respite or symptom control, they can be referred to the Hospice's 25-bed Inpatient Unit in Selly Park, typically for a two-week stay. Around 50 percent of inpatients are able to return home following their treatment. We also have a 20-place Day Hospice. This is open to patients to visit once a week on a prearranged basis and offers medical support, a range of therapies from complementary to creative, and an opportunity to meet others in a similar situation. And crucially, the Day Hospice gives carers and loved ones the chance of some time to themselves. The Hospice has a team of social workers and counsellors. They are there to help relatives of all ages, including children, to come to terms with bereavement, assist in the personal affairs of vulnerable patients who lack a family network, or trace long lost relatives among many other roles. Birmingham St Mary's Hospice would not be possible without the support of its hundreds of volunteers. They work in a variety of positions ranging from receptionist and driver to catering assistant and finance support. Around 45 percent of the Hospice's £6.6 million annual running are costs met by the NHS, whilst the remaining income comes from the community in the form of fundraising and sales in the charity's nine shops. The Hospice was the brainchild of retired nurse Monica Pearce who, back in the 1970s, had identified a need for better care for people with incurable conditions along with more support for their relatives. Today, Birmingham St Mary's continues to follow that founding philosophy.
