Care and Repair Edinburgh was set up in 1985 to offer a range of practical services to help older people repair, improve or adapt their homes so that they may remain in their own homes in comfort and independence for as long as possible. Over the past 30 years we have supported thousands of older people through our experienced team of staff and volunteers including handymen and women, joiners and gas fitters who help improve older people's homes. Some of these practical jobs can be quite large from installing a stair lift or central heating to fire alarm systems. Since we started we have established a number of services in response to older people needs including: Small repairs Handyperson Hospital discharge service: Trade referrals In the year to March 2015 our staff and volunteers carried out 378 small repairs, fitted 974 keysafes, and completed 1207 handyperson jobs. All of these jobs meant older people are safer in their own homes with reduced risk of falls or accidents, are more connected with family and friends, can get discharged more quickly from hospital and are more able to live independently in their home. As well as these direct services we also provided over 1300 referrals on behalf of older people and their family/carers to tradesmen that we have vetted and trusted to provide high quality, value for money repairs and jobs that are out with the scope of our team. This helps clients save money and reduces the stress of finding a trusted tradesman who will visit their homes. Demand for our services continues to rise Small Repairs: currently we have 2 qualified joiners who visit older people in their homes to carry out small repairs. Typical joinery jobs include fitting door handles, handrails, and draught excluders and making small repairs to broken locks, rotten windows and/or doors. Handy person service: 20 volunteers focus on small DIY jobs such as changing lightbulbs, fitting carbon monoxide detectors, fixing and changing electrical plugs/switches, fitting door chains and heavy curtains. Our Handy Person service also offers technical support helping set up TV’s, PC’s (including printers, Skype and PC lines), changing/setting up phones with voicemails. Some of the tasks of our Small repair/Handy person teams may seem very simple and basic activities eg changing a lightbulb or fixing a door handle. But if you are an older person living on their own who has poor mobility, balance and/or motors skills these simple repairs and jobs can be life saving. For example if a light bulb fails many older people are forced to sit in the dark until someone can help or worse struggle onto a wobbly chair to try and reach the light socket themselves. It is no wonder numerous reports highlight that most older people aged 65+ will fall at least once at home, with kitchens and bathrooms being the most risky environments. As more older people get confident about using social media tools such as Skype become invaluable helping them maintain visual links with members of their family or friends who have moved away. Thus reducing their feeling of loneliness.
