About Operation Wallacea Madagascar 2017 - Elizabeth Small

I am a 17 year old student and will be embarking upon an Operation Wallacea expedition in July 2017. Operation Wallacea runs a series of vital biological and conservation management research programmes in remote locations worldwide. The aim of my expedition is to contribute to the long-term monitoring programme in the Mahamavo dry forests and the Nosy Be marine site of Madagascar. Despite having been reduced to only 3% of their original size the Mahamavo dry forests are currently receiving no form of formal protection. I will work for one week in the dry forest site alongside lead scientists to develop my biodiversity knowledge and data collection skills. I will collect important information for the area management plan and the crucial search for alternative sustainable industries, reducing any further loss of forest cover and consequently preventing the extinction of endemic species. One of the important long term goals of this work is to present the forest areas for funding under the United Nations REDD+ scheme to further protect the forest and its wildlife. I will be spending a second week at the Nosey Be marine site. As an Advanced PADI qualified diver I will be working to complete the essential annual surveys of the reef fish and coral communities to assess the effectiveness of the National Park in protecting these reefs. To aid this work I will be partaking in an Indian Ocean reef ecology course.
