SLV is a voluntary organisation which started in 2010. SLV runs projects to help the local community of Bali, while also helping students to gain valuable experience in a completely different culture. I will be using my skills and knowledge of psychology to contribute to this organisation. I will be joining SLV in Bali for 4 weeks in July 2018 on the Psychology placement. Bali has a lack of availability and resources when it comes to helping those affected by mental health conditions. For most communities, the journey to receive treatment is often extremely long and tedious. This is because the understanding surrounding mental health is poor, and there are few facilities to receive treatment. By volunteering in Bali, I will be providing support to those with mental health issues by running therapeutic activities, which aim to improve valuable skills and increase well-being and self-esteem. Throughout the placement my time will be split between a variety of projects to challenge me. These projects include providing support in a psychiatric hospital, by producing creative activities to engage under stimulated patients. I will also be teaching English to school students and people from the local community to increase confidence and career prospects. I will also be assisting with childrens development, this includes creating original activities and projects to allow children to socialise and explore their emotions in a safe environment. I will also be supporting those with special needs, most commonly those with brain injury and autism. This is because these projects are under-resourced and challenging. I will use physical and mental activities to unlock their creative potential. The reason I chose to volunteer in Bali is to experience non-western approaches to heal the mind, and to gain a new perspective of the world. The ambitions I take with me when volunteering in Bali includes offering help to those less fortunate than myself, and make an impact in the best way I can. To accomplish this, I feel that the best way to use my time is to help others where I am most needed, therefore I want to work with SLV as I understand that every contribution makes a real difference, and I want to be a part of that. The personal ambitions I take with me to Bali include becoming a more independent, challenging and well-rounded person. I wish to be able to push myself out of my comfort zone, as well as finding out my own strengths and weaknesses when helping others. Such discoveries will help shape my career goals. In turn this experience will offer me valuable, hands on experience providing me with a unique, attractive CV.
