Over £35m raised for good causes through easyfundraising
Hi, my name is Laura Ramsden. I am 31 years old. I have a disability called Cerebral Palsy and have been in a wheelchair all my life.
In December last year I had an operation to help me stand, walk and improve my mobility. I have wanted this operation done since the age of 11 and ,so far, it seems to be working.
For me to progress and do well I need intensive physiotherapy but the NHS can only provide one 45 minute treatment per week. Anything else needs to be paid for by myself. I am making good progress now but this is largely down to the private clinic sessions I have been attending since the 25th February 2011
At the age of 16 I was signed off from Children’s Services. As an adult with a disability it is very difficult to get any help and assistance you need after the age of 16 years. The majority of treatment I require is now classed by the hospital as maintenance ,for which I have been told that there is no funding within the NHS to provide this. This means a large number of people are currently being left without any help at all making them feel worthless and forgotten.
I originally wanted to fundraise for my own medical treatment but after seeing the difference that neurological physiotherapy has made for me in as little as six weeks. I have decided that I want to set up a charity "Laura's wish" in order to give everyone the same opportunity I have now found for myself.
Originally, I wanted Laura's wish just to help adults and young people post 16 because that was when all the medical help and input stoped in my case and has in many others.
However since I decided on this route and began fundraising it came to my attention that small children as young as 6 years are being told they had reached their peak and there is nothing more the hospitals can do for them. In no way do I believe that this is the case. No one should be written off, least of all small children who haven't even begun to show their capabilities and even a fraction of what their potential could be.
Laura's wish will now be open to disabled people of all ages with neurological disabilities. The aim for myself is to progress as far as I possibly can, prove the hospitals wrong and show them I can do more and walk better than they ever thought possible.
The aim and end goal for Laura's wish is to be able to provide neurological physiotherapy for anyone that needs it as well as providing medical equipment such as walking frames exercise equipment and wheelchairs. This is going to be achieved my fundraising so please help to support me in my end goal of walking and helping others with disabilities by making Laura's wish become a reality.
