About this cause

About our cause

I am an assistant guide leader with the 7th Shirley Guides and have been chosen to represent the London and South East Region for an international trip to South Africa in 2011 to support God’s Golden Acre Khayelihle project located in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Girlguiding UK is the United Kingdom\'s largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women, with over 550,000 members including about 100,000 trained volunteer adult leaders and supporters. I am sure you know someone who has been a rainbow, brownie or a guide. When we make our promise one of the key ethoses is to help other people and I am planning to travel with 14-18 guides to South Africa for 3 weeks to make a difference to a community which has been devastated by HIVS/Aids. The HIV/Aids pandemic is now reaching its peak in Kwa Zulu Natal. It is the worst affected area in the world; 36% of the population is HIV positive and up to 250 deaths are recorded a day. Heather Reynolds is the founder/director of God\'s Golden Acre Khayelihle. She is an amazing woman whose pioneering work has resulted in saving thousands of desperately sick and dying orphaned children who have been affected by HIV/Aids. Heather has established an extensive rural outreach project that now cares for more than 4,000 orphaned and abandoned children who were living in appalling conditions, providing a basic food parcel, education and school uniforms. Heather started a child-sponsorship programme that more and more people are supporting, thus enabling more and more families to receive the basic necessities to survive. Rather than simply putting the children in orphanages, God\'s Golden Acre Khayelihle primarily strives to keep children in their community setting by assisting families using various initiatives to support themselves. The project’s aim is to achieve the following: • To provide children with a good education. • To assist them to become well-adjusted adults. • To develop the natural talents and aptitudes of each and every child. • To provide a caring, loving, nurturing and compassionate community environment. In order to take part in this amazing project which is making a real difference to children’s life’s on a daily basis I need to raise £2,500. I will be holding a variety of fundraising events within my region from a South African family fun day, boot sales, quiz nights and taking part in local community events. Any form of financial support or product donations of any description would be gratefully received and I would be more than happy to advertise the names of the companies or individuals that have supported me at the various events I will be fundraising. If you would like to support me please contact me as follows: Address: 25 The Lees, Shirley, Croydon, Surrey, CR0 8AR Email: elizabeth_bown@hotmail.com or elizabeth.bown@uk.nestle.com Telephone: 0208 777 8045 (evenings only) or 07955 621 325.
