St Mary’s is a Grade 1 listed building, listed as being of “exceptional interestâ€. Parts date back to the 12th century, but substantial alterations and repairs were made in the 18th and 19th century. The first recorded rector was instituted in 1233. In the graveyard is the Grade 2 family tomb of the Carrington family. In the Church is a bier with an inscription dated 1631. The tower provides uninterrupted views of the village and its surroundings. The tower has many inscriptions, some dating back to 1736.
The church became very dilapidated in the 1980s and was extensively restored in the mid-1990s.
The clock mechanism, dating back to about 1750, was replaced by a new mechanism in 2002, as a celebration of the Millennium. The old mechanism is available for inspection.
