Paul's Pond Enhancement Scheme has been created to improve the quality, biodiversity and habitat protection for wildlife at the pond and surrounding area for all to enjoy. One of the main aims is to protect the habitat of the endangered 'White Clawed Crayfish' which is being threatened by the 'American Red Signal Crayfish' We aim to do this by protecting their habitat and hopefully increase their numbers. Rising silt levels within the pond are reducing the number of cracks and crevices in the banks that these crustaceans need to seek refuge from predation. De-silting the pond and depositing the silt behind a plastic piling or Nicospan barrier will increase the depth of the water and reduce the threat of predation, it will also allow fish fry and small fish greater protection from freezing winter conditions. When this silt has dried out sufficiently it will be planted with seeds to create a wild flower woodland which will attract more wildlife. Re-profiling the feeder stream and incorporating a reed bed filter system will slow the build up of silt and provide additional wildlife habitat. The creation of a dipping pond in the area of the old boat house will be a great addition to the scheme and will allow children and School/Community groups access to a whole new experience of pond life. A number of fishing platforms may be introduced to reduce the possibility of conflict as anglers are forced to set up on the banks where the footpath is close to the pond. At some time in the future it may be possible to hold fishing coaching at the pond which would be open to all ages. We have already introduced a number of floating fish refuges in an effort to increase fish populations as these have been decimated over the past few years by predatory birds and the freezing shallow water in winter.
