The object of the RCBS shall be to promote the academic study of Buddhism and explore its relationships to the religions of the world through the national and international collaboration of all scholars whose research has a bearing on the subject. The means whereby the object is pursued may include the arrangement of annual lectures, conferences, workshops, symposia and colloquia, the development and maintenance of a web site, the publication of a newsletter and academic literature, and such other activities as the RCBS shall from time to time determine. In addition, on the practice side, the RCBS shall facilitate and aid the learning, teaching and practice of Buddhism at all levels by providing resources and forming avenues in enhancing human wellbeing through practices such as the meditation. It shall promote monastic education and Buddhist practice, provide facilities to meet the training needs of young Buddhist monastics and lay people in order to enable them to acquire practical skills in modern enterprises and become self-sufficient and sustainable. Recognising the importance of religion for harmony and co-existence in society, the RCBS shall pay attention to interfaith work. To benefit the wider community, it shall take into account political, economic and social conditions of the local environment. To empower communities and protect human rights and preserve the dignity of all life forms, the research of the RCBS shall investigate the importance of values and norms for healthy social lifestyles.
