About this cause

About our cause

The Riversiders Trust is responsible for providing unique and vital social facilities for adults and teenagers with learning disabilities in South Lakeland. The Riversiders Club for adults meets every Tuesday from 4pm to 8pm and the Steps Club for teenagers meets every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.

Both clubs meet at Kendal Day Centre and attract almost 100 people from South Lakeland including Sedbergh, Milnthorpe, Ambleside, Bowness and Chapel Stile as well as Kendal. Riversiders and Steps are run professionally by Oaklea Trust and have been funded for the past fifty years by Westmorland Mencap. Unfortunately lack of funds means that Westmorland Mencap is unable to continue to do this and Riversiders Trust has taken over the financing.
The service provides many varied activities including playing music, karaoke, art and crafts, pub visits, cookery, table games, pool, table football, ten pin bowling, making friends and socialising, outdoor sports in summer such as cricket, rounders, walking, running group, sailing and each year we stage a Spring Show at the Parish Hall which attracts an audience of about 150.
The service improves the social skills of people with learning disabilities through social interaction and encourages its members to try out new skills and take an active part in community life. The members take an active role in managing Riversiders which encourages them to understand responsibilities and empowers them to make decisions thus helping them to gain confidence to improve the quality of their lives and to become a valuable member of the community.

The service also supports their families and carers by providing valuable respite time.
