Tamar Donkey Sanctuary

Tamar Donkey Sanctuary

Albaston

The Tamar Donkey Sanctuary charity No 1138221 was established in 2010 to raise much needed funds to help pay for donkey feed and welfare. The cost of feed and veterinary services has risen substantially and more treatment is needed with our aging group of donkeys. The home of the sanctuary is The Tamar Valley Donkey Park which was established in 1989 and is run as a tourist attraction to pay for the upkeep of the rescued donkeys and other animals. The Sanctuary survives mainly from the entry fee to the Park and the Adopt-a-Donkey scheme. The first group of donkeys (14) were rescued from Eire in 1989 and some of them are still here today, as you know they live for “donkey’s years”, currently our oldest is in her early forties and our very oldest lived to 49. Some donkeys needed rescuing others needed a new home for various reasons such as: loss of grazing, left in a will or aging or infirm owner unable to look after their donkeys anymore. We now have 25 donkeys, 6 ponies and many other rescued animals. Tamar Donkey Sanctuary donkey’s go out into the community for events such as: Palm Sunday, carol services, fetes and shows.
