My expedition starts in Managua which is the capital city of Nicaragua. We will then begin acclimatisation phase 1 which will be a tour over the Mombacho Volcano. This will lasts for about 1 or 2 days. We will be driven to our stating point (Mombacho) where we will receive a briefing and general information about the tour. We will then be taken up into the reserve where we will start our walk from the biological station. We will have a choice between two trails. Either the Crater trail (Sendero del cráter) or the Puma trail (Sendero del puma) which both start from the same place. Whichever one we choose will form a loop and take us back to the biological station. Acclimatisation phase 2 will be on Ometepe Island where we will climb one of two volcanoes – Maderas or Concepción. In addition, we can trek around the base of Maderas, trek to the waterfalls at San Ramón from either Mérida or Balgue, and visit the petroglyphs around Balgue. The start point depends on the specific day trek to be undertaken - however, we will travel into the port of Moyogalpa near Volcán Concepción and this will also be our end point. The trek my group and I decided to undertake is the 5 volcanoes in 5 days trek. It will be in the Los Maribios volcano chain which lies on the western side of Nicaragua, and is known as the belt of fire on the Pacific Coast. The area is composed of a linear chain of active volcanoes - such as Momotombo and Cerro Negro - which host a diversity of flora-fauna and amazing landscapes. Our start point is in León (a 1.5 hour drive from Managua) and our Memo will pick us up from our accommodation there. After the trek we will be brought back to León to a hostel provided by Fun N Sun Travels. Our project phase has a main focus of improving education facilities in local communities. This aims to improve the school environment and reduce overcrowding, multi-grade teaching (with many children of all ages crammed into old, damaged classrooms). This may also involve work with reforestation, building recycling plants or planting vegetable gardens which adds to children's education. Our project will take place in the community of Nueva Esperanza which lies 3km southwest of Granada. One of the activities we will be doing for our R&R phase is stand up paddleboarding. There are 2 areas near Granada where this activity can take place - Laguna de Apoyo or Las Isletas. Livit Water will pick us up from our hostel in Granada and then drop us back there at the end of the activity. -After driving to the lagoon in Laguna de Apoyo, we would receive a full safety briefing before learning basic paddleboarding techniques. We will then launch from the beach area and paddle parallel to the shore visiting the various bays, practising techniques for turning and paddling faster. We may also have the opportunity to paddle to the area of the shore that has hot springs bubbling up! However if we choose Las isletas we will drive to the marina to receive a full safety briefing before learning basic paddleboarding techniques. We will then launch from the ramp and paddle around about 20% of the islands in the sheltered area within the Asese Peninsula. We would have great views of Mombacho volcano and the distant Concepción volcano on Ometepe Island, as well as see a variety of bird life and maybe even some monkeys! Another activity we will be doing is zip lining located in Café Las Flores Headquarters. Mombotour will pick us up from our hostel in Grenada upon request and also bring us back upon request. The activity consists of a series of platforms built into the forest, creating a unique and thrilling adventure. There are 16 stations, 6 zip lines, a walking wire called “Double Crossâ€, an optional game “Boomerangâ€, or “Tarzan Swingâ€.
