Our cause looks to build using the Olympic/Paralympic legacy. Competitive wheelchair sports has been away from the Tees Valley but retained strong connections. At the turn of the millenium the local wheelchair sports club which brought on paralympians, Lee Fawcett and Terry Bywater, amongst other regional athletes, merged with a Newcastle club and wheelchair basketball was lost to the area. There is now a strong team of individuals who believe Tees Valley needs inclusive participation sports to engage young and disabled people and are bringing wheelchair sports back to the Tees Valley with an inclusive focus.
The club is looking to develop a number of sports, starting with Wheelchair Basketball (Tees Valley Titans) as this offers a great team comradery and inclusive participation for all. We strongly believe that this sport is capable, once again, of uniting disinherited and segregated groups in the community and building their confidence, social and moral ability and fitness levels.
The community has fewer than 1 in 16 disabled people regularly participating in activities and we would like to give people a set of real options to get active and competitive. Without us looking to provide coaching and equipment, many of the families of disabled people cannot afford the expense of participating in sport requiring specialised equipment and a lot of travelling; figures show that generically families of disabled people are on lower incomes than other families. Not only do we look to bring young people into a sport and offer awareness to those who are not disabled but we offer a level playing field to unite disparate factions of our community.
