The brainchild of David ‘The Weirwolf’ Weir CBE (6 x Paralympic gold medalist wheelchair racing) and his coach Jenny Archer, the Academy was launched in April this year to deliver on the Paralympic legacy promised by London 2012. Based at the Kingsmeadow Athletics stadium where David trains, The Weir Archer Academy is now poised to make a true impact in the delivery of opportunities offered to young disabled people who wish to participate in sport, whether for social and health reasons, or a desire to be the next David Weir, Jonnie Peacock or Hannah Cockcroft. An additional and not insignificant benefit is the social and support network that is building up between the parents, siblings and other carers, a group that can often find themselves extremely isolated. The charity has a vision of integration for the future, and recognises the power for change in the hands of these young people, who will grow up to be the architects, developers and governors who can truly deliver on the legacy of inclusion from London 2012.
