Whirlow Hall Farm Trust

Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is a unique environmental and educational charity . Each year we provide an outstanding learning and developmental experience for up to 10,000 children, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, and young adults with disabilities and special needs from inner city areas - a classroom in the countryside. A day at Whirlow provides children a hands-on way to further their understanding of a real working farm and the environment. For many of our young visitors this is the first time that they will have visited the countryside. They may never have seen a farm animal close to before. By holding a newly hatched chick, bottle feeding a new-born lamb or simply seeing a pig with her piglets for the first time they are having an unforgettable experience and at the same time learning about where our food comes from. As a fully operational working farm, there is a lot to see at Whirlow. The farm is 138 acres of upland on the edge of Sheffield. We have a flock of 300 ewes and a pig unit with 20 farrowing sows plus at any one time up to 120 of their offspring. There are a few cows and their calves, plus a poultry shed with not only laying hens but also a variety of other poultry. There are several acres of soft fruit which we offer on a pick-your-own basis. Finally we have 4 horses in livery and a small animal handling unit with ponies, goats, pet lambs, rabbits and guinea pigs. As a working farm, we are able to sell the produce from the farm. You can buy fresh eggs and sausages, bacon and other pork products every day. When it is available, we also offer whole and half boxed lamb.
