This summer (July 2013) I will be going on a three and a half week expedition to Zambia with my school. Here I will spend most of my time at an all-age community school called Fiwila. A lot of the children here are orphans, and many of them sleep and eat at the school as well. So my aim this summer is to help carry on the support my school has provided over the years, by helping teach the children various subjects including Maths, English, Science and History- to help give them a better education and hopefully therefore a better chance for the future. I will also be involved in many community projects here to try and help the school and the surrounding area. For example, in the past, students from my school have been involved in helping at the local orphanage, clearing an airstrip, setting up a tree nursery and refurbishing the children’s playground. Part of the expedition requires me to raise a minimum of £4,000 and any additional amount raised will go towards new equipment for the school and children (for example, last year extra money raised by students went towards buying a set of computers for the school, that now allow them to use the internet for educational and communication purposes). Personally, I hope to grow as a person, becoming more independent and aware of the world we live in.
