Birmingham Dogs Home: 130 years of caring

This month we are spotlighting the amazing Birmingham Dogs Home as our cause of the month! 2022 is a very special year for them as they’re celebrating their 130th birthday! That’s 130 years of caring for lost and homeless dogs.

Birmingham Dogs Home care for abandoned, abused, neglected and homeless dogs from across the Midlands. They rescue over 2,500 dogs every year and rely entirely on the goodwill and support of the general public in our local communities.

Their mission: To Rescue-Reunite-Rehome all the stray and abandoned dogs across the West Midlands & South Staffordshire area.

Boarding and Grooming services:

Birmingham Dogs Home offers dog boarding services at their Birmingham and Wolverhampton centres. Allowing you to enjoy your time away, stress-free in the knowledge that your best friend is receiving 5-star treatment from an experienced, trained, dog-loving team. Kennels have under-floor heating and outside runs. They also offer grooming services, all the money earned by these additional services help to support the charity to continue to help homeless dogs.

In-house Veterinary Clinic:

The charity accepts every dog that needs their help, no matter their condition. They are trusted by nine local authorities to take in strays which means that half of the dogs are malnourished or have suffered some form of neglect or abuse. This means they often have multiple injuries or untreated medical conditions.

As a result of this, their veterinary costs have been increasing year on year which has eventually led them to build their own veterinary clinic. The new clinic’s ongoing running costs will be significantly less and will mean they can work much more efficiently with an in-house service. The BDH veterinary clinic is for treating the dogs in their care and also assists other rescue centres in the local area.

Community Events:

Each year they hold community events for everyone to enjoy – friends, family and pets included! These range from family fun days to community walks and challenge events. The charity also has a quarterly Fetch Magazine where they share the latest news and events. They share dogs’ stories and share new opportunities to help the charity raise vital funds. Funds raised by these events help support the charity financially.

Pawty-Time!

This year they are celebrating 130 years and are hosting a Pawty to kick off the celebrations. This is a ticket only event in which supporters of the charity are invited to attend, with or without their pooches, for a fun afternoon of celebrations, photos, history, pupcakes and more!
